Malwal’s Journey – Harmony Week

In celebration of Harmony Week that focuses on building respect, inclusiveness and belonging for all Australians despite their cultural background, WPC Group wanted to shine a spotlight on the story of one of our apprentices, Malwal Maguang.

Sudan-born, Malwal came to Australia in 2004 with his parents and siblings, comprising of two brothers and four sisters. Malwal described Sudan as a “tough place to grow up [and] very limited in resources, so [we] had to make the best of what we had”. Malwal and his family first moved to Toowoomba for twelve months before settling down in Perth. After living in Perth for twelve years, Malwal moved to Melbourne where he soon commenced an Engineering (Fabrication) apprenticeship at Krueger Transport in Truganina, in Melbourne’s west, following the completion of his Year 12 studies at St Albans Secondary College.

Malwal had highlighted that his culture had taught him to be a good listener, always respect his elders and the importance of building strong connections with those he is surrounded by, all of which has helped him throughout his apprenticeship and time at Krueger Transport.

He believes cultural diversity is crucial as it “helps to dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about different groups [and allows us to] recognise and respect ‘ways of being’ that are not necessarily our own”. As Krueger Transport facilitates such cultural diversity in its workplace, Malwal always “feels very included and supported”.

With only three months remaining until his apprenticeship completion, like us at WPC Group, his “family are so proud” of all his accomplishments and eagerly await seeing his future achievements. To Malwal, “This apprenticeship means so much”, and through it, has aimed to inspire others within his community to follow in his footsteps!
