Christopher Krklinski, 18, says he was surprised at the amount of paperwork in the automotive industry, which he’s just joined as an apprentice.
“It has to be carried out to ensure the customer knows exactly what’s been done to their car. But we do use technology as well to plug into the car’s computer to diagnose any problems,” says Chris.
Early in February, he started his apprentices hip at Mercedes-Benz Sydney. Chris completed his HSC at Aquinas College and as part of that obtained a Certificate II in Construction.
“Earlier, I had wanted to be a carpenter but I found a new love, automotive. Getting my license, and being around friends who also drive cars, I wanted to know more about how engines work. My mates and I have already done simple oil changes and I’ve helped a friend and his father rebuild a Honda Integra motor.” Chris enrolled in Skilling Australia Foundation’s Citi New Recruits Program because he heard it would prepare him well for his apprenticeship. It did that and more as he’s learnt about workplace safety, working in a team environment and co-operating with people who he didn’t know at all. Once he finished the program, he was fortunate to be offered an automotive apprenticeship at Mercedes-Benz Sydney.
“The program helped me open up a lot and gainconfidence in meeting new people. Everything I learned from the 3 week program was relevant and actually relates to my apprenticeship. It covered many skills I use as an apprentice today,” says Chris.
“I’m on the right track with my career. I wake up every day and feel very fortunate to have an apprenticeship with Mercedes-Benz Sydney. I am eager to continue to learn and gain as much knowledge as I possibly can to be the best technician I can be”.
