'Make your move' - The Advertiser, Adelaide

Apprentice jobs are now up for grabs. Cara Jenkin reports.

JOBSEEKERS considering starting an apprenticeship do not have to wait until the end of the year to do so, with many employers looking for junior staff throughout the year.

Group training organisations are not only taking registrations for apprentices to start at future intakes, including early 2018, but also to get started on their careers right now.

These organisations employ apprentices and find them host companies where they do their on-thejob training. They also can mentor apprentices to find the right trade for them, as there often is more than one option available, and throughout their training.

Jordan Blackwell approached one group training organisation, WPC Group, after high school with an interest in becoming an electrical apprentice.

He signed up to do an electrical pre-apprenticeship course first, to see if he liked the trade and to get some basic on-the-job skills. "I knew uni wasn't for me," he says. "I was interested in doing something while I was doing nothing." He got about halfway through the course when an alternative career path was suggested.

"They called me up and said we haven't got any (employers) looking for electrician (apprentices) but we've got an airconditioning job, which involved electrical work," he says. "I thought, why not?

"To be honest I got into it not knowing anything, not having any expectations." At the end of Blackwell's apprenticeship, the host company - Air Pressure - employed him as a qualified refrigeration and airconditioning tradesman.

He has since bought into Air Pressure and is a co-director.
